Mason Holding Release Routes
Mason County law-enforcement holding means the short-term arrest and transport work of the Mason County Sheriff or a municipal police agency. Official sources did not document a separate public county jail that holds adults long term. West Virginia’s regional-jail system controls the main public custody route. A person arrested by a Mason deputy or Point Pleasant officer can have a local arrest record, then a WVDCR admission at Western Regional Jail and Correctional Facility.
Some people may leave the arresting agency before regional-jail admission when lawful release conditions are met. Others are transported to Western. Once WVDCR accepts the person, the regional-jail record becomes the custody source. A later absence from a sheriff page proves nothing because no verified sheriff roster exists. Likewise, a missing jail-search result can reflect release, transfer, spelling, data lag, or another jurisdiction.
Confirm Mason Holding Release
Begin with the arresting agency when the person may never have reached Western Regional Jail. Ask for the arrest or incident number, arrest time, disposition at the agency, transport record, and any citation or release authority that is public. Then inspect the Mason court record. A bond, dismissal, commitment, or release order explains legal authority, while the agency record indicates what physically happened.
If transport to regional custody occurred, move to the WVDCR Jail Offender Search. Search the correct name and variants. Compare the facility, date of birth, booking date, image, and court information when available. Do not stop at a missing result.
- Confirm which sheriff or police agency made the arrest.
- Ask whether the person was released locally or transported to WVDCR.
- Search Western Regional custody if transport occurred.
- Check VINE and the Mason court docket for the same person and event.
- Request a focused WVDCR release entry if no portal states the result clearly.
The two-stage check matters. A local transport log may show delivery to Western but cannot establish a later release from Western. A WVDCR record may show release or transfer from jail but does not replace the arresting agency’s incident file. Mason County’s released-inmate search path connects these sources when the arrest location is known but the later custodian is not.
Note: No official Mason County Sheriff inmate or released-person roster was verified in the research.
Mason Holding Record Custody
Send each request to the office that created or holds the desired record. The Mason County Sheriff may hold arrest, incident, prisoner-transport, extradition, or court-service material. A municipal police department may hold its own arrest file. The Mason Magistrate Clerk or Circuit Clerk holds docket entries and filed orders. WVDCR holds the Western admission and release event. Asking one office for every part can lead to an incomplete answer even when each agency responds correctly.
| Record needed | Likely custodian |
|---|---|
| Local arrest or incident | Arresting sheriff or municipal police agency |
| Transport to Western | Transporting agency and WVDCR admission record |
| Bond, dismissal, or commitment order | Mason Magistrate or Circuit Clerk |
| Regional-jail release time and type | WVDCR or Western Regional Jail |
A useful request gives the full name and aliases, date of birth if known, approximate arrest date, agency, incident number, and a narrow date range. Ask for the specific arrest disposition or transport entry. For WVDCR, add Western Regional Jail, Mason County as the arresting or sentencing county, and the OIS number when known. Ask for release date and time, authority or type, and receiving agency if public.
Under West Virginia FOIA, a reasonably specific public-record request must receive an action within five days, excluding weekends and legal holidays. The deadline does not promise full production in five days. Privacy, law-enforcement, security, juvenile, sealed, and other protected material may be withheld or redacted. Request all reasonably segregable public portions.
Mason Holding Records Contact
The Mason County Sheriff is the official local contact for records that office created. The Sheriff should not be described as the operator of Western Regional Jail or the custodian of WVDCR’s release log. State and local roles remain separate even when both records concern the same arrest.

Sheriff Corey Miller

For lower-court documents, the Mason Magistrate Clerk is at the same courthouse and can supply filed material beyond the online index. Circuit matters route to the Mason Circuit Clerk. Courthouse hours are published as Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with holiday closures subject to change. Call before travel and give the case number when available.
Mason Release Court Records
Mason County uses two online criminal-record doors. The Magistrate Record Search accepts a name or case number for lower-court matters and returns an index, but not the actual documents. WVPASS covers available circuit records. The filed order should be obtained from the clerk because an index label can omit terms that determine what happened next.
A court order and physical release answer different questions. An order setting bond does not prove the bond was posted. A dismissal ends the cited charge as a custody basis but does not rule out another case or hold. A commitment order can send the person into WVDCR custody rather than into the community. The local docket provides the legal reason, while the arresting agency or WVDCR supplies the physical event.
- Recognizance
- Release based on a promise to appear, subject to court conditions.
- Commitment
- A court order placing the person in a stated custodian’s authority.
- Detainer
- A hold or request from another authority that may change the destination.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian, not a release into the community.
Note: A bond release lets the case continue outside jail; it is not a dismissal or finding of innocence.
Mason Release Geography
Once a person is admitted to Western Regional Jail, use WVDCR sources. Western is in Barboursville, Cabell County, yet its official service area includes Mason. This geography explains why a Mason County jail search can lead outside the county. It also prevents a common records error: sending a request to the Mason Sheriff for a state regional-jail release entry.
A Western departure may be bond, court order, time served, dismissal, sentence completion, transfer to state prison, or handoff under another hold. Search VINE for the same person and agency, then compare the alert with WVDCR and the court. VINE is an event-notification system. It is not a full case archive, and a change can reflect transfer after arrival.
No official 24-hour or 72-hour Mason release archive was found. Daily Incarcerations lists admissions or current incarceration-oriented data and cannot be relabeled as releases. For a past event, a focused WVDCR request is the affirmative fallback. State the date range, facility, identifiers, release type, and desired destination field clearly.
Lakin Correctional Center and Jail adds the other half of Mason’s unusual custody map. It is a statewide women’s prison physically inside Mason County, while Western is the regional jail serving Mason from Cabell County. A local holding record therefore cannot be routed by the closest facility name alone. The person’s pretrial, county-sentence, or state-prison classification determines whether the jail search, prison search, or local agency record comes first.
Mason Holding Coverage Limits
The Youth Reporting Center in Point Pleasant is not part of this adult facility map. It is a community-based juvenile program. Juvenile confidentiality rules make it wrong to blend its participants with adult released-inmate searches. A corrections-related name or address does not turn every program into an adult jail.
Federal custody also requires a separate route. If a federal warrant or U.S. Marshals designation changed the destination, use the federal docket, BOP where sentenced federal custody applies, and the receiving agency. An immigration detainer may lead to ICE custody. A release from Mason or Western to one of those agencies is not release to the street.
The most defensible conclusion is narrow. State what the last source proves and identify what remains unknown. “Released by the arresting agency” does not show whether WVDCR later admitted the person. “Not found in active jail search” does not establish a community release. “Transported to Western” does not explain Western’s later disposition. Matching each event to its creator prevents those errors.
Time also affects which source is most useful. A fresh incident may still be documented first by the arresting agency and court. Once admission occurs, WVDCR becomes the custody source. After a person drops from the active jail view, the court docket and requested release entry are more durable than repeated searches of a live roster. VINE can add a reported event, but it must be compared with the responsible agency. This sequence avoids forcing a short local hold into the shape of a county jail record that Mason County does not publish.
When asking for a correction, identify the specific record and error. A local arrest-record issue belongs with the local creator. A Western custody field belongs with WVDCR. A court index or order issue belongs with the filing clerk. Sending the correction to the right custodian is as important as sending the original request to the right office.
